A Courageous First Step

The Seeker's Journey

There was much talk in the monastery about a religious man who was also a political activist who had set himself on fire and died. While no one in the monastery approved of the man taking his life. there were some who said they admired his faith. They argued that he had the courage to act on his convictions.

The spiritual master asked, "Do you think that is faith? I think it was more fanaticism. Authentic faith demands a greater courage: the courage to reexamine one's convictions and reject them if they do not fit the facts."

Until a person finds the courage to face one's hidden fears and insecurities that come into conscious awareness when he can honestly admit he may be wrong in his understanding of God and the teachings of his religious tradition, then that person will remain stuck at his current level of consciousness.

To admit this is difficult, but it is necessary in order to experience Divine Presence. A second-hand faith is simply not sufficient. Our certitudes can prevent us from discovering our true Selves and the wonder, awe, and joy that can only be found on the seeker's journey.
